Laser
Marking
Permanent, High-Contrast
Identification on Metal Parts
Twin City EDM & Manufacturing offers laser marking solutions for permanent, high-contrast identification on precision parts. Our advanced systems produce detailed, durable marks without altering the integrity of the component, making them ideal for parts that require serialization, traceability, or branding.
What Is Laser Marking?
Laser marking is a non-contact process that uses a concentrated beam of light to mark the surface of a material. The laser beam generates heat and oxidizes, engraves, or ablates the surface. The result is a legible, high-contrast mark that won’t wear off over time.
Unlike mechanical engraving or ink-based methods, laser marks do not introduce stress, distortion, or chemical residues. It is the preferred method for industries with strict regulatory and quality requirements.
Why Choose Laser Over Other Marking Methods?
- Permanence: Durable Marks withstand repeated sterilization, cleaning, or handling.
- Speed: High-speed lasers reduce cycle times, even on high-volume runs.
- Flexibility: Able to mark a wide range of materials and part shapes.
- Zero Consumables: No inks, acids, or stencils, resulting in lower costs and less maintenance.
- Regulatory Compliance: Helps manufacturers comply with industry regulations, like FDA UDI (Unique Device Identification) and aerospace traceability standards.
Common Applications
Medical Device Traceability
Lasers mark orthopedic implants, surgical tools, and reusable instruments with UDI codes, part numbers, and batch information. These durable marks withstand repeated sterilization, including autoclaving and chemical cleaning, without fading or degrading. Our marking processes align with FDA and ISO 9001:2015 & 13485:2016 requirements.
Aerospace Part Serialization
From turbine blades to electronic housings, aerospace components often require permanent, scannable markings that survive high heat, vibration, and environmental stress. We apply serial numbers, barcodes, and data matrix codes that support AS9100 and NADCAP compliance.
Defense and Military Compliance
We support Tier 1 defense contractors and OEMs by marking firearm components, targeting systems, and enclosures. Required identifiers, such as NSNs, lot numbers, and serialized barcodes, are applied with the precision and permanence demanded by ITAR, MIL-STD, and other regulations.
OEM Branding and Labeling
Laser marking enables companies to clearly brand metal and plastic components. We regularly mark logos, part numbers, and proprietary data onto housings, handles, fasteners, and connectors. These marks are tamper-resistant, fade-proof, and ideal for anti-counterfeiting strategies.
Precision and Assembly Safety
Lasers only affect the surface and do not introduce stress, making it safe for thin-walled parts, high-tolerance features, and tight assemblies. Clients rely on us to mark delicate surgical guides, aerospace substructures, and high-precision instrument parts without altering their performance or fit.
What Materials Can Be Laser Marked?
Laser marking is most effective on materials that can efficiently absorb heat energy. Ideal properties include surface conductivity, heat resistance, and contrast after oxidation or ablation.
Materials compatible with our systems include:
- Stainless Steel
- Tool Steel
- Aluminum
- Titanium
- Brass
- Copper
- Nickel
- Plastics (various types)
