Welding

Twin City EDM & Manufacturing offers laser welding services that provide precise, high-integrity joints for complex components across the aerospace, defense, medical, and industrial sectors. We utilize advanced equipment and controlled processes to deliver repeatable, durable welds with minimal heat-affected zones, making them ideal for parts that require both structural strength and dimensional accuracy.

What Is Laser Welding?

Laser welders use a concentrated beam of high-energy light to join materials. When focused on a precise location, the beam generates enough heat to melt the base material, sometimes with filler, sometimes without. As the molten material cools, it fuses into a strong, continuous bond.

This welding method enables deep penetration, narrow seams, and minimal thermal distortion. It’s ideal for intricate assemblies, thin-walled parts, and materials with dissimilar thermal properties.

Compared to MIG or TIG welding, laser welding offers significantly greater control, repeatability, and access. Whether you’re working with miniature surgical components or aerospace-grade alloys, the process delivers clean, consistent results with minimal to no post-processing.

Advantages Over Traditional Methods

Engineers and manufacturers often turn to welding with a laser because it has many performance and significant cost advantages:

  • Extremely Precise: Small spot size and narrow heat zone protect nearby features and finishes.
  • Minimal Distortion: The rapid, localized heating prevents warping and maintains tolerances.
  • Strong Joints: Welds meet or exceed the strength of the parent material.
  • Versatile: Joins similar or dissimilar metals, with or without filler materials.
  • Highly Repeatable: Automated systems ensure consistent quality across high-volume production.
  • Clean Process: No flux, filler spatter, or post-weld cleanup needed.
  • Easily Automated: Compatible with CNC and robotic integration for lights-out manufacturing.

How the Laser Welders Work

  1. Part Preparation: Components are carefully cleaned and clamped to ensure tight seams and minimal contamination.
  2. Programming and Beam Focusing: Welding parameters—such as laser power, travel speed, and focus depth—are tailored to the material and geometry of the parts.
  3. Laser Activation: The laser beam is directed at the joint line, melting the material at the interface. Depending on the setup, the weld may penetrate the full thickness (keyhole welding) or fuse only the surface (conduction welding).
  4. Cooling and Solidification: The molten pool quickly resolidifies, creating a strong metallurgical bond with minimal internal stress or defects.

Common Applications of Laser Welding

Medical Assemblies

We regularly laser-weld surgical tools, housings, catheter components, and other precision parts that require hermetic seals and biocompatibility. The process is clean, repeatable, and adheres to ISO 9001:2015 & 13485:2016 quality management requirements.

Aerospace and Aircraft Components

Our laser welders join lightweight, heat-sensitive parts for sensor housings and instrumentation enclosures. The welds endure thermal cycling, pressure, and vibration without degrading, and meet AS9100 and FAA traceability standards.

Defense and Tactical Equipment

We provide clean, secure welds for parts that must survive heavy loads, harsh environments, and mission-critical conditions.

Industrial and Custom Fabrication

Laser welding is a go-to solution for OEMs building complex frames, enclosures, or connector assemblies. Whether the project requires speed, miniaturization, or specialized materials, we deliver durable welds that streamline manufacturing and extend product life.
