Twin City EDM has added a new Mitsubishi MV2400-R Advance Plus M800 wire EDM machine to the floor and it represents a significant step forward in what we can offer. This particular model expands our capacity to handle larger parts with the kind of tolerances that our clients in demanding fields like aerospace, medical device manufacturing and defense rely upon.
Size and Work Envelope
The first thing you notice about the MV2400-R is its size. We are talking about a work envelope that handles workpieces up to 41.3 inches wide and 32.3 inches deep. When we submerge the workpiece in dielectric fluid (a common method for stabilizing the cutting process and flushing away debris) the machine can handle a part weighing up to 3307 pounds and standing 12.2 inches tall. That is a heavy, substantial piece of metal to work with.
The machine travels along the X, Y and Z axes with a range of 23.6 inches, 15.7 inches and 12.2 inches respectively. This larger table and increased travel distance lets us take on jobs that did not fit comfortably in our previous setups or that required multiple setups to complete. Now, we can hold a single setup for a larger component, which helps with overall part consistency and reduces the time spent moving work between different stations.
How the Machine Moves and Cuts
But it is not only about raw size. The MV2400-R brings a level of control over the cutting process that is genuinely impressive. The machine uses a non-contact cylindrical drive system on the X, Y, U and V axes. What that means in practice is that the axes move without any physical contact, which eliminates backlash. Backlash is the small amount of play you sometimes feel when a mechanical part changes direction. By removing that play, the machine can follow a tool path with a high degree of fidelity. The U and V axes handle the taper cutting and the machine can achieve a taper angle of 15 degrees through a 10.2-inch thick workpiece. This is a capability that opens up possibilities for creating complex geometries that would otherwise require multiple machining steps.
The Control Interface and Power Supply
The control system is the M800 series, which features a 19-inch touchscreen. This is the primary interface for the machine operator. It provides a clear window into what the machine is doing and allows for quick adjustments. The screen can display a lot of useful data at a glance, which helps the operator monitor the job’s progress. For programming and data transfer, the machine supports USB flash memory and Ethernet with FTP.
The machine uses a V350-V AEII power supply with digital spark control under the hood. This power supply incorporates anti-electrolysis protection, which is an important feature for maintaining the integrity of the workpiece material. It also uses a system called DMX-S, which is a digital matrix sensor that shapes each spark. One of the benefits of this control is reduced electrode wear, which translates to more consistent cuts over a longer period.
Threading, Communication and Connectivity
The auto-threading system has been updated with a longer annealing length of 17 inches. This specific improvement increases the reliability of the auto-threading cycle. The internal communications are handled through fiber optics, which move data around the machine’s control system four times faster than previous systems. This speed contributes to smoother, more responsive machining.
For connectivity, the machine is remote360-enabled, which allows you to remotely monitor it and view diagnostics. This is a practical feature for a job shop environment. It means that if a question arises about the machine’s operation or performance, support can often be provided without a service technician needing to be physically on-site. This capability can reduce the time a machine is down for troubleshooting.
Warranty and Service Coverage
The MV2400-R comes with a full 2-year warranty through the Triple Diamond Partnership Program. The non-contact cylindrical drive system also carries a special 10-year positioning warranty. The machine includes a complimentary preventative maintenance visit to be used during the first year of operation.
What This Means for Our Customers
Including the MV2400-R in our lineup allows us to take on more challenging work. It is a machine that offers a combination of size, control and reliability that directly benefits the parts we produce for our customers. This is a new tool that expands our capabilities.
